NawiriGroup B Corp Recertification

NawiriGroup has successfully recertified as a Certified B Corporation, improving our B Impact Assessment score by almost 20% since our last group-wide certification three years ago.

The recertification reflects our continued progress across the business, from reducing operational impacts and strengthening governance, to embedding sustainability more deeply into everyday decision-making. More importantly, it demonstrates the work of hundreds of people across the organisation, from camp teams monitoring energy and water use, to engineers trialling new technologies, procurement teams strengthening supplier standards, and office teams improving the systems that underpin responsible business.

The certification builds on a journey that began more than a decade ago. In 2012, Asilia Africa became the first travel company in Africa, and only the second globally, to achieve B Corp Certification. In 2023, certification expanded to encompass NawiriGroup and all our brands, reflecting a shared commitment to responsible business across the organisation.

Certified B Corporations are businesses independently verified by B Lab to meet standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. The assessment considers how a business performs across governance, workers, community, environment and customers, providing a structured framework for measuring and improving business practices over time.

What B Corp means, and what it doesn't

As expectations around sustainability claims continue to rise, it's important to be clear about what B Corp certification represents.

Certification does not mean a business is "fully sustainable", "the most sustainable", or that every aspect of its operations has been independently verified as having a positive environmental impact. Nor does it suggest that the work is complete.

Instead, it means that we have been independently assessed against B Lab's certification standards and have met the requirements for certification under the version of the standard against which we were assessed. Certification also requires regular recertification and provides a framework that supports continuous improvement over time.

We're proud of the progress reflected in this recertification, but we're even more interested in what comes next. B Corp gives us a robust framework for measuring ourselves honestly, identifying where we need to improve, and embedding sustainability across every part of our organisation. The score is an important milestone, but it is only a marker of our ongoing progress rather than the end goal. The philosophy of continuous improvement is reflected in the group's operational progress over the past year.

Beyond B Corp, we are continuing to make progress on our wider sustainability agenda. Within our safari operations, generator diesel consumption has fallen by 17%, exceeding the annual reduction target, while plastic use per bednight has reduced by approximately 44%. Electrification trials continue across our fleet of vehicles, providing valuable operational learning ahead of wider deployment. We continue to develop our work on supply chain sustainability and more than 70% of the third-party properties we have assessed across Tanzania, Kenya and our key Southern African destinations now meet our minimum sustainability baseline.

These projects sit alongside wider investment in renewable energy, responsible procurement, improved environmental data, supplier engagement and transparent reporting. Sustainability is increasingly being embedded into operational planning, investment decisions and long-term business strategy.

By 2030, NawiriGroup aims to set the benchmark for impact-led travel in Africa through best-in-class operations, impact at scale, and a business model where purpose and commercial performance reinforce one another. Our score may have improved this year, but the ongoing success is measured every day through the decisions we make, the standards we uphold, and the progress we continue to deliver.

Note: Our latest assessment was completed under B Lab's Version 1.6 standards, the framework in place at the time of assessment. B Lab is now introducing updated certification standards (Version 2.0), which will apply to future certifications. Our certification remains fully valid under the standards against which it was assessed, and we are already preparing for the next framework as part of our commitment to continuous improvement.
